Saving, Accessing, and Working with Drafts
Learn to recognize when your account has a saved draft, how to access editing it again, and how to discard it and start over with the version which is currently live. This lesson is a direct sequel to Editing a Page, and picks up where that one left off. This lesson works only if you know of a page that already has a saved draft. If you do not have a page with a saved draft, either read and absorb this lesson, or go to the lesson for Editing a Page and complete that first, then return here.
If you have already completed Cascade training and you have a live asset with which to work, please follow along using your real asset. If you are using this guide for practice, please always use the _playground site. Yes, it starts with an underscore. It is a test site specifically meant for practicing.
NOTE: This lesson is a direct sequel to Editing a Page, and picks up where that one left off. This lesson works only if you know of a page that already has a saved draft. If you do not have a page with a saved draft, either read and absorb this lesson, or go to the lesson for Editing a Page and complete that first, then return here.Follow these steps to learn how to work with drafts in Cascade.
Step 1
Select Another Asset
If you need a place to practice, you can select the _playground site. This lesson uses the trainee1 page as an example, which already has a draft saved from the Editing a Page lesson. If you already have a page with a saved draft in your department or school website, then just use that one. The beginning of this lesson assumes you are in the correct site for the draft you want to work with, and that you have that asset currently selected. For the first step here, select a different asset than the page with the saved draft. For the example, click on the _playground folder's selection arrow. If you are using a different site, you can use that site's main folder's selection arrow instead. This is to illustrate that when re-selecting the asset in step 2, the default view will have changed from the saved draft to the currently live version (i.e. the version previous to you making any changes).
Step 2
Re-Select Your Page
Now, navigate back to your page. The example clicks the websites folder to expand it. Then, click your personal page created during the "Creating a New Page," lesson, or whichever page you are currently working with.
Step 3
Notice Which Version
Now that you have navigated back, notice that the asset now displays the word "Current" in the top left, and you are looking at your page without your recent edits. Selecting an asset in the Explorer displays that asset's currently live version, NOT your saved draft.
Step 4
Switch Version
Step 5
Notice Version Changes
Notice that the Draft version now says "Draft" in the top left, contains the saved changes your account made from the previous lesson, and has the Submit and Discard buttons at the top. Every time you "leave a field" in the editor, Cascade saves a draft of your changes. Clicking the Preview Draft button will also save your changes.
Selecting an asset from the Explorer displays the current version by default. But selecting it any other way displays the draft version by default. The next two steps are alternative ways to select a saved draft on your account so that it automatically displays the draft version.Step 6
My Content Default Draft Selection
If you would like to navigate immediately to the draft version of an asset, click the My Content button. Click the header option for Drafts. Once the drafts display, click the correct draft. Notice that it immediately displays the draft version of the page asset.
Step 7
Dashboard Drafts
You can do the same thing from the Dashboard when you log in. Click the Cascade icon to navigate back to the Dashboard. Click the header option for Drafts under the My Content section. Click the correct draft. Notice that it immediately displays the draft version of the page asset.
Step 8
Discarding a Draft
To discard a saved draft, make sure you have the correct asset selected, and that you are viewing the draft version. Then, click the Discard button. Your browser will display a popup asking if you want to discard those changes. If you really wanted to, you would click the OK button.
