How to Format Text Using the Text Module
In this lesson we are using headings to show how to format text in the Text Module. Other formatting types such as bold, italic, and block quote are done in exactly the same way, but not all options exist on all sites for all users.
Headings are a type of formatting in Cascade, and probably the type of formatting most used. Headings are super important for accessibility reasons (ADA compliance), so do not use headings for their aesthetic appeal. Rather, use headings to organize sections of your page as you would items on a resume.
In this lesson, we will be adding a heading 2 since all page titles are already a heading 1. Examples of this are the “Heading 1” on the first screenshot here, or as in the “Trainee 1’s Page” title on the screenshot for step 1 in this lesson.
If you have already completed Cascade training and you have a live asset with which to work, please follow along using your real asset. If you are using this guide for practice, please always use the _playground site. Yes, it starts with an underscore. It is a test site specifically meant for practicing.
Follow these steps to learn how to format a heading using the Text Module in Cascade.Step 1
Edit Page or Draft
Find any page in Cascade you can edit. You can use the _playground site if you do not have a current page to edit. If you already had a draft saved, click the Edit button, then click the "resume editing" link to continue with your last changes. If starting a new edit, click the Edit button.
Step 2
Type in Text
Step 3
Highlight Text
To format the text, highlight all of the text you just typed.
Step 4
Heading 2
Click the Formats (plural) dropdown. Make sure not to click the Format (singular) dropdown, unless you then proceed to select the Formats option from its sub-menu. Hover over the option for Headings, then move your cursor to the right and click the option for Heading 2. Notice that there is no option for Heading 1 because all page names are automatically Heading 1 for screen readers, so there should never be more than one Heading 1 on a page.
This is how any necessary formatting to text in a text module would be applied. Other formatting options include bolding, italics, and some department-specific options.
Feel free to continue using your current example if you wish to continue with more text module lesson.Need Help with a Department or School Website?
